What: Strangers No More

Lin, Maryellen and I went to go watch the video Strangers No More which was about a school in Tel Aviv that was a public school that had a lot of migrant workers and refugees from all over the world. A few of the children that went to the school never have enrolled in school before. Most of the children faced some sort of trauma prior to coming to the school, for example one boy fled Sudan after watching his father and mother murdered before him. The reason why the school is so successful in educating these students is because they approach education in a therapeutic and holistic way. In that, the teachers are caring and nurturing but push their students to succeed. They look at the whole child-they get to know their personal story, they deal with not only their education but their health, family issues, legal issues-everything. The school created a community where each person is valued for who they are--each student has a sense of belonging. They have a strong leader and strong educators. They value their teachers highly and support them as much as they can. They don't turn students away from their school because they are refugees or immigrants.
After the movie they had a man who worked with the school and with many organizations around Ethics discuss the background of the school and issues around education. The point that he made that resonated the most was that the reason why this school was successful because the set of values that the country has. They have a sense of brotherhood, they value the good of human kind.
I am curious if the United States were to change their values as a country (if this would even be possible) that education would also take a shift. We tend to value the best for our own-selves, how we could make the most money, get the biggest bang for the buck rather than doing what is best for mankind.
One thing that I can take away from this movie is the value they placed in creating a school culture that valued the whole child and the whole family. The school was there to support the families because the school was part of the community. They truly worked together as a team which was so valuable.
